Events Team Active Support

Event Team Logo_100pxwideThe Durham Scout Events Team organises eight major events each year attended by over 4000 people - from the Beaver Picnic to Confido, we are experts at putting together large-scale, high impact and great quality events. The Events Team Scout Active Support Unit is made up of people with a wide range of skills and experience who all love putting on great events, working with other volunteers in a team and having fun. We have a role for everyone.

What events does the team organise?

GirlonlowropescourseThe Events Team is responsible for delivering the large-scale events in Durham, from thinking up the initial idea to tidying up at the end. We look after events such as:

  • Climb When Ready - electronically scored climbing competition for Cubs, Scouts, Explorers and Network.
  • The Geoffrey Gordon Cup - weekend adventure competition for Explorers.
  • Windsor - Durham Scouts' reception before the National Service and Parade.
  • Pete Swinney Competition - orienteering competition for Cubs.
  • Beaver Picnic - a summer afternoon of fun for Beavers.
  • Cub Adventure Day - a summer day of adventure for Cubs.
  • Awards - a day long celebration of achievements, from the youngest Beaver Scout to our dedicated volunteers.
  • Confido - our weekend adventure festival for 1200 Scouts and Explorers.
  • Other special events - such as Cubboree, celebrating the Cub Centenary in 2016.

How does the Events Team Scout Active Support Unit help?

VolunteergetstostartfightsOur members have a wide variety of experience and absolutely love getting stuck in where required. Each event will differ but typically we need help with:

  • Preparing for the event - from paperwork to building large stages and marquees.
  • Leading teams of volunteers - we need people who can bring teams together quickly.
  • Keeping us fed and watered - looking after our cafe and catering outlets.
  • Looking after young people - from camp wardens, to the help desk, to first aid.
  • Delivering great activities - from helping on those ingenious crafts to the adventure activities.
  • Keeping things running - making sure the power, water and technical gear is in fine order.
  • Keeping us entertained - camp fires, music and videos keeping us going 24/7.

What is a Scout Active Support Unit?

Scout Active Support allows people to give their time to Scouting on a flexible basis. People can still be involved in Scouting without the full-time commitment of being a leader. Find out more on the Scout Active Support website.

How does the team work?

SilentDiscoThe team is made up of like minded people who love delivering events. Here is how it works:

  • We'll sort out all your paperwork (including a DBS check if necessary), so you're ready to roll.
  • You'll be kept up to date with all the latest news about our forthcoming events.
  • When we're in the process of organising an event, we'll ask you if you want to volunteer to help and send you information on how to register.
  • You'll get the option to purchase exclusive Events Team mechanise.
  • You may decide to take on a specific role - such as taking overall responsibility for organising an event or running a team
