Congratulations to 3rd South Shields Team B - Winners of the 2010 Geoffrey Gordon Cup!

Over 100 Explorer Scouts from 4 different counties descended upon Commondale in North Yorkshire to take part in the annual Geoffrey Gordon Cup and this year’s competition was bigger and better than ever!  21 teams arrived at Pybus Campsite on the Friday evening and everyone was in an exited mood but once routes were planned and tents pitched the competitors settled down to physically prepare for the big day ahead.

Sunshine all round greeted both Participants and helpers alike on Saturday Morning. With teams setting off throughout the morning into the beautiful surrounding hills and forests of Commondale. The bases were varied and tested a number of physical, mental and communicational skills. Challenges such as Scrambling, Tomahawk Throwing, a Tilt Obstacle Course and a final water challenge with a pyrotechnic ending all lay ahead for the eager young people.  One of the big twists this year was the fact that Pybus was only the start of the competition, the ending of the Saturday hike was at Ravengill Campsite over 20km away. Some teams also took part in the 4km challenge, a race against the clock to be the fastest team to finish the final 4km to Ravengill, this was won by team Greg from Bishop Auckland.

By Saturday night everyone was tired but still smiling, giant inflatables, a film, burgers then bed was the programme for the evening meaning everyone was ready to go for the final push to the finish on Sunday.

The final challenge was a race against the clock to visit as many bases as possible in the local area before 1 o’clock.  This was a great mix of navigational skills to find unmanned orienteering markers and teamwork to complete a whole number of tasks like improvised first aid or South African Abseiling. Before they all knew it, time was up, everyone was back to Ravengill and the scores were being tallied. Explorer Scout Nick Weight from Crooke and Weardale said, “The weather was sunny, but a bit windy, the walking was a long way but we managed it fine, the activities were challenging and we all had a really good time.”

Event Organiser Ian Hammond said “this year’s Geoffrey Gordon was the biggest we have hosted in recent years and a huge success. It was great to see over 100 enthusiastic Explorer Scouts doing what they do best, taking part in exhilarating adventurous activities and competing for that ultimate prize – the Geoffrey Gordon Cup. None of this would be possible without a dedicated team of 40 helpers who made sure the event ran incredibly smoothly.”
