Go Global!

29 July 2018

This is a really exciting week for a lot of young people in Durham Scouts - we probably have more young people involved in international scouting experiences that ever before.

I'm down at Walesby Scout Camp with Darlington Explorers, helping out with a coach load of Explorer Scouts and leaders joining in with the Walesby World Experience. There are also Scouts here from Darlington and I'm having a super time.

Meanwhile:

  • We have another coach load of Explorer Scouts and Leaders from Blaydon district in Adelboden in Switzerland
  • Scouts from Derwentside and Darlington are spending a week of adventurous activities in France
  • We have more Durham Explorer Scouts and Scout Network members than ever before at Roverway in the Netherlands (making up three patrols with our friends from Northumberland)
  • Our very own 'Tall Ships Crew' are taking part in the Tall Ships race from Stavanger in Norway to Harlingen in the Netherlands (and when I'm back from Walesby I'm going to fly over the Amsterdam to meet up with them and come home on the ferry). Please do take the time to follow them via county social media.

I am delighted that so many of our young people are getting the chance to meet people from other countries and to travel. Travelling as a scout is completely different experience to travelling with e.g. a school trip and our young people gain so much from it. Thank you to all our hard working volunteers who put in the extra time to make this possible.

Not every leader can take a week to help out with a week long or 10 - 14 day trip abroad and not every leader can afford it. I hope that all groups and districts have the ability to help support leaders financially where that is the case and remember that there is also funding support available from the county.

As busy as this week is, there's more coming up...

In 2019 we have 56 young people going to the World Scout Jamboree in West Virginia and another 50+ Scouts and Explorers joining the county trip to the Kandersteg International Scout Centre. In 2020 we have our very own Durham2020 international camp in Wolsingham when the world will come and meet us, and we're just about to start planning our Explorer Belt expeditions for 2021.

Which begs the question - what are YOU going to do to give your people the change to meet the world? There are international camps in the UK every summer, and there's plenty of help to take your young people abroad. What are you waiting for?

If you'd like more details, just drop ACC(International) Dave Russell an email on international@durhamscouts.org.uk - he'd love to hear from you!
