Network Chill Out – and Young Adult Choices

7 January 2018

It's the end of the first scouting weekend of the year, and I've been at the county Network Chill Out Camp at West Hall (thanks for the invitation guys).

While I was there I took a walk and recorded a video blog about the choices that should be available to our 13 year-old scouts and 17 year-old explorer ecouts (sorry for the wind noise, and young people do of course join the movement at the age of six, not sixteen as I said).

If you're wondering about the video, someone suggested towards the end of last year that I should record more vlogs rather than type, so I thought I'd give it a go this year.

For those who can't see the video, the main messages are:

  • The young leader scheme continues to be very important and we'll be doing more county young leader training  this year
  • I intend to focus more on working with Districts on adult recruitment in 2018
  • Despite the above, Scout Leaders must give all our 13 year old scouts informed choices about joining Explorer Scouts, becoming a Young Leader, or doing both
  • Likewise, our Explorer Scout Leaders must give all our 17 year old explorer scouts informed choices about joining the Scout Network, becoming an adult leader/supporter, or doing both

That's it for another week, but I'll leave you with some photos from the Network Chill Out Camp at West Hall (yes, there was music and dancing, late nights, service work, camp fires, games and quizzes and even baking - but I cannot claim credit for the cakes!)
