2020(+1) European Jamboree

Note that the European Jamboree has been postponed from 2020 to 2021. As a result of the change, we are looking for more Unit Members, Assistant Unit Leaders and members of the International Service Team.

The new date for the Jamboree is 2nd to 13th August, with travel either side of these dates (likely 2nd to 16th August) to be confirmed.

Note that the dates of the European Jamboree no longer coincide with our own Durham2020 international camp which is now postponed to 2022.

Following the award of the 2023 World Scout Jamboree to South Korea, the Polish Scouting and Guiding Association decided to hold a European Jamboree, in Gdansk Poland. This was originally planned to be from 27th July to 6th August 2020, but due to the coronavirus emergency this has been postponed to the first half of August 2021.

This will be the first European Jamboree for fifteen years (see https://www.ej2020.org/ for more details). Durham Scouts had appointed a Unit Leadership team of four adults and had selected 36 young people of Explorer Scout age (at the time of the Jamboree in 2020) to go the European Jamboree.

As a result of the postponement a number of our youth members and adult leadership team are unable to attend and we are now looking to recruit:

  • 10 new young people
  • 2 Assistant Unit Leaders
  • Additional members for the International Service Team

Note that unlike a World Scout Jamboree we are planning and organising the whole trip, including transportation to/from Gdansk and a post Jamboree experience.

Support is being provided to the Unit Leadership Team by experienced leaders in the county as well as the ACC (International). The good news is that this will cost significantly less than a World Scout Jamboree, with a cost of £1,500. This  includes:

  • The Jamboree experience (including food)
  • Flights and other ancilliary transportation and other costs (transfers, food while travelling)
  • A 2 night / 2 day pre or post Jamboree experience in Poland
  • Equipment (uniform, badges, holdall and day sack, hoodies etc)
  • Training and preparation camps

The cost of the Jamboree would be met from fundraising over the next 10-12 months, with some financial support available for eligible members.

For more details on the European Jamboree please see The Scouts Eurojam webpages

Available Places

Due to various circumstances, ten of the young people originally selected to attend EuroJam 2020 are no longer able to attend and two of our original Unit Leaders are now unable to attend. This has opened up opportunities for replacement youth members AND Assistant Unit Leaders. Note that to attend the European Jamboree as a youth member you must be a member of Durham Scouts and be aged 14, 15, 16 or 17 at the date the Jamboree starts (early August 2021) i.e. already a older Scout or younger Explorer Scout.

If you would like to attend the European Jamboree these places will be allocated after an on-line interview. Fundraising support will be provided and assistance will be provided for those needing to apply for additional funding support. A new payment schedule will also be agreed to allow new participants to pay between now and August 2021.

Note that the closing date for applications is September 10th 2020.

Please therefore read the information form below, and download and complete the Application form below. and return to EuroJam2020@durhamscouts.org.uk

Adults interested in the role of Assistant Unit Leader should email eurojam@durhamscouts.org.uk in the first instance

International Service Team (IST) Places

As a result of the event being postponed, there are additional opportunities for adults (aged 18 or over at the time of the Jamboree in August 2021) to join the International Service Team. Durham Scouts already have a good number of adults attending, including some from other local Scout Counties. For more details of who the IST and and what they do visit https://ej2020.org/ist/
