Friends of Moor House

The Friends of Moor House Scout Active Support Unit works with volunteers and staff teams to help create a world-class adventure centre in Durham. We are a group of Scout members, all volunteers, who all care passionately about Moor House and help in whatever way we can.

What does Friends of Moor House do?

abseilingWe're responsible for supporting the Moor House Management Board with implementing our ambitious development plan by:

  • Helping to improve the site through working parties
    • The BIG days: We are looking for people who are interested in coming to site 2 or 3 times a year, for full days where a big project is completed around site by adult volunteers – previously this has been building an ‘area’ such as campfire circle or taking down the marquees
    • The Garden Gang: We are looking for anyone who would like to come in on an ad-hoc basis, perhaps once or twice a month to help with our ‘potter’ jobs from taking the ivy off the trees, to weeding and planting, with a focus on making the site attractive and welcoming.
    • Section visits: We would like to encourage all sections to visit the site to help to complete a full or part of a badge and help us in the process! For Explorers and Scouts this could be Activity Centre Service Activity Badge or Naturalist Activity Badge or Environmental Conservation Activity Badge or even the Fundraising Activity Badge to help fund some of our projects. For Beavers and Cubs this could be Gardener Activity Badge, DIY Activity Badge, Environmental Conservation Activity Badge or Naturalist Activity Badge. We can also help sections working towards Community Impact Staged Badges
  • Donations of plants, seeds, tools, paint or other items which would be useful to maintain and brighten up the site
  • Fundraising for specific projects
  • Marketing the Centre to Scouts and customers outside of Scouting
  • Taking on responsibility for delivering certain projects

Forthcoming activities

  • Monday 16th March 11am -3pm Tree Planting: We have 240 tree saplings to plant from the Woodland Trus

What is a Scout Active Support Unit?

Scout Active Support allows people to give their time to Scouting on a flexible basis. People can still be involved in Scouting without the full-time commitment of being a leader. Find out more on the Scout Active Support website.

How does the team work?

mountain-bikingThe team is made up of like minded people who want to help Moor House. Here is how it works:

  • We'll sort out all your paperwork (including a DBS check if necessary), so you're ready to roll.
  • You'll be kept up to date with all the latest news about Moor House.
  • When we're in the process of organising a working party or we're looking for assistance with a project, we'll ask you if you want to volunteer to help and send you information on how to register.
  • You may decide to take on a specific role - such as taking overall responsibility for running the team or a project.
