This year, over the weekend of 22nd and 23rd July, Durham Scout County joined colleagues from Northumberland Scout County at Northern Pride in Newcastle.

Northumberland Scout County have been attending Northern Pride for the last few years, and as part of a growing cooperation in scouting matters across the River Tyne, Northumberland invited members of Durham Scout County to jointly plan and attend this year's event.

Although members of Durham Scouts have previously attended Northern Pride, this was the first time the Scout County were there in an official capacity and members from both Counties took part in the Pride parade on Saturday 22nd July. We joined hundreds of other supporters and dozens of other local organisations in demonstrating our commitment to equality and building a more inclusive society, and showing that as Scouts we openly welcome LGBT+ and all members (see scouts.org.uk/pride for more details).

There was a great atmosphere throughout the hour long parade from Newcastle Civic Centre to Exhibition Park, with a great reception from an enthusiastic and supportive crowd, who didn't seem to mind roads being closed and shopping being delayed for such a bright and cheerful event (despite the grey clouds).

On the Saturday afternoon and Sunday, volunteers also manned a stall in Exhibition Park, promoting Scouting and the message that we are a fully inclusive movement and welcome all members. It was great to hear all the positive comments about Scouting's involvement in the event and fantastic to see so many young people come along who are already involved in Scouting or who were interested to hear all about how open and diverse we are.

There were plenty of takers for our leaflets, rainbow 'Northumberland Scouts, Durham Scouts' bracelets and people literally queuing to have rainbow paracord bracelets made.

Everyone enjoyed the lively and colourful parade, the friendly atmosphere and the chance to work, meet and celebrate with Scouting colleagues from Northumberland - so much so that we're already talking about Northern Pride 2018, and the possibility of supporting more Pride events in the Scout County.
