The County Youth Team

What do we do?

The Youth Team's role is to promote #youshape Scouting in all forms and help people gain a better understanding of the ideas behind it. We strive to ensure that youth members are actively involved in key decisions made in the county. It is also our role to support district's in doing the same, we regularly meet with District Youth Commissioners to help them implement #youshape scouting in their district.

Who are The County Youth Team?

Mark Ireland : County Youth Commissioner

Mark is a 'born and bred' scouter. Involved since an early age, he has moved right through from Beavers and is now currently a member of the Scout Network. His role as County Youth Commissioner means he ensures all of Durham Scout County is moving towards Youth Shaped Scouting - one of the four key areas of Vision 2018. Mark's involvement in Scouting lead to an inspirational trip to the 23rd World Scout Jamboree, in Japan. Scouting has also given him the opportunity to complete his bronze, silver and gold Duke of Edinburgh Award. Outside of Scouting, Mark works as a Degree Apprentice at Northumbrian Water Limited, working in IT.

Caroline Knox : Deputy County Youth Commissioner

Caroline Knox is the Deputy County Youth Commissioner. She has been in Scouting since Beavers and is now an Explorer leader and Network member. Outside of Scouting Caroline enjoys Ballroom and Latin Dancing. She is also a second-year university student studying Geography at the University of Hull. Caroline also attended the 23rd World Scout Jamboree, in Japan. Caroline's role is largely to support The County Youth Commissioner and ACYC's in their roles.

Lewis Hardy : Assistant County Youth Commissioner - Events

Lewis has been in Scouting for over 10 years. Starting as a Beaver Scout he has moved through the Scout movement and is currently a Young Leader for the 24th Darlington Scouts where he's been helping for the last 3 years and has completed all his training. He is also a member of Ravensdale Explorer Unit, Darlington. In his role as Assistant County Youth Commissioner for Events he works closely with the ACC Events and events team to ensure a #youshape presence at county events and inform members of what #youshape scouting is and how they can implement it in their groups or district.

Outside of Scouting Lewis works part-time as a Kitchen Porter in a cafe and studies Graphic Design at college. He then hopes to move into a career in design.

Ben Dodds : Assistant County Youth Commissioner - Programme

Ben Dodds is the ACYC for Programme. He has been in Scouting since Beavers and is currently in Explorers. He has also completed all of his Young Leader training and is a Young Leader for Cubs. Outside of Scouting Ben does climbing and is very into his music playing both flute and drums. He is studying Maths, Physics and History at sixth-form.
